Xiaomi has recently shaken up the smartphone industry with the release of its latest series. One thing that makes people wonder when they first see it is its design, which is similar to that of a famous smartphone brand, namely the iPhone. Apple has also recently released its latest series, the iPhone 17. These two smartphone brands have designs and series names that are almost identical. Although the designs look the same, the features offered by the two are very different.
The discussion about the similar designs has not only sparked various reactions from ordinary gadget users, but has also become a hot topic of conversation among gadget observers from each brand. Some praise Xiaomi for its better design and numerous features while maintaining an affordable price. However, others criticize Xiaomi for lacking innovation in creating new models for its next series, resulting in designs that closely resemble and mimic Apple's designs.
Xiaomi is known as one of the smartphones brands whose designs are sometimes inspired by other brands, one of which is Apple. Several recent Xiaomi series do indeed look almost identical to Apple, for example the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro, which has a similar camera design and the raised frame typical of flagship smartphones in general. Then came the newly released Xiaomi 17, whose appearance is even more similar to the iPhone 1, starting from the camera layout and the shape of the smartphone itself.
Xiaomi itself is not only focused on creating a similar design, but also on incorporating more advanced features. Xiaomi strives to combine innovative elements that Apple does not have, such as the use of a small screen on the back. In addition to taking photos, there is a small screen next to the camera on the back. This screen can likely be used to view notifications, control music, and take selfies. These features are the opposite of those offered by Apple. In the iPhone 17 series, there is no screen on the back of the smartphone like the one on the Xiaomi 17. This proves that Xiaomi has its own uniqueness, even though the design is almost identical.
With this almost identical design, it has created mixed reactions from the market. Many consumers like the design launched by Xiaomi. Consumers are not worried about the excessive selling price and have gotten other cool features in one smartphone. There are also those who think that such a design is considered less creative because it is almost identical to other brands. Observers' views sometimes differ from those of consumers. Some technology observers argue that it is natural to follow developing trends. They believe that Xiaomi has succeeded in providing a good combination of innovation and more advanced features. On the other hand, there are also those who argue that innovation comes from the ability to create something new that no one else has used before.
Meanwhile, Apple has not been sitting idly by. They have created new features that are no less sophisticated, such as iOS 26, whose features also adapt from popular Android features. Both Apple and Xiaomi are competing to launch attractive designs and features to attract new consumers and win their attention. The competition in smartphone design shows that competition in the smartphone market is getting tougher.
Amidst the debate over the similarities between Xiaomi and Apple's designs, it is clear that trends in the smartphone market are constantly changing, with more advanced designs and features emerging. Xiaomi has successfully introduced the latest features while maintaining more affordable prices. Although these similar designs can cause controversy, they also show that inspiration can lead to creativity and healthy competition.
In my personal opinion, the most important thing is to provide the best experience for users. Providing more advanced features and minimalist designs can attract new consumers. Xiaomi appears to be aware of this, despite being influenced by popular design trends. As consumers, it is important for us to consider how much we need these advanced features rather than just focusing on the exterior design. Evaluating products based on the experiences of others who have used them first is also important because it will influence our decision to purchase them.
