In Chainsaw Man’s world, love can also be the deadliest weapon. Reze, or the Bomb Devil, is not only an emotional turning point for Denji, but also a reminder that in the world of Devils and Devil Hunters, there is no happiness that comes without a price.
First introduced as a sweet girl
working at a cafe, Reze seemed like a breath of fresh air in Denji's life
filled with violence and manipulation. She was cute, caring, and seemed
genuinely fond of Denji. However, like most characters in Chainsaw Man, that
friendly face was just a mask.
Reze turns out to be a Hybrid from the Soviet Union sent to Japan to win over Chainsaw Man's heart. What makes this arc so painful, aside from Reze's betrayal of Denji, is that Reze's feelings for Denji eventually grow into something real.
“Everybody’s after my chainsaw
heart! What about my heart? Denji’s! Does nobody want that?! Huh?!”
“I do. I mean it when I said I like you, Denji.”
The conversation happened in the middle of their fight. And it became one of the most iconic and emotional scenes in the movie. And at the end of the movie, Denji offers a way out, to run away together—leaving all the chaos behind—Reze hesitates, but changes her mind and heads to the café.
Reze never made it to the café.
Without warning, Reze is killed before she can set foot in the café. And Denji,
who was waiting at the café, never knew that Reze had come.
