Recently, we’ve frequently seen video of “Tepuk Sakinah” appearing on internets platforms like TikTok, Instagram and others. These videos have captured the attention of netizens. First posted by KUA Menteng account in December 2024, the video has gone viral recently. It has garnered a wide varienty of  unique and humorous comments.

What is “Tepuk Sakinah”?

Tepuk Sakinah is a shorthand practice performed during marriage guidance sessions at the Religious Affairs Office (KUA). This phenomenon has attracted considerable attention because the guidance, wich is usually conducted formally, is now interspersed with educational and fun elements. This is done to make easier for prospective brides and grooms to understand the values of harmonious family.

As Abdul Hakim, the registrar of the Menteng KUA in Central Jakarta, stated, "Initially, Tepuk Sakinah was just a simple way to memorize important points in marriage guidance." And from that, it finally developed into the "Tepuk Sakinah" that we now often see on social media, as Abdul said when met at the Menteng KUA on Friday. "So, for this Tepuk Sakinah, we received material from the registrar and the counselor in the Technical Guidance. In the training, there were presenters. One of the materials was to memorize the five pillars of sakinah using this clapping technique."
