How often do you speak your regional language? Can you still read or write its script? For many young people, the answer is "just a little" or "not at all".
In this digital age, we are used to fast and practical language. We often mix Indonesian with English. Because of this, regional languages and old scripts slowly feel strange to us. Some people even think they are old-fashioned. In many families, grandparents still speak the regional language well, parents can use both, but young people mostly use Indonesian or English. If this continues, many regional languages in Indonesia may disappear in the future.
Knowing our regional language and script is actually cool and special. It is like having a secret code or a unique identity that not many other young people have. It makes us different. It also shows that we are proud of our own culture and roots. This heritage is part of who we are. If we lose it, we lose something valuable that cannot be replaced.
Let’s start with small and easy steps. You do not need to read thick old books right away. You can begin by using some local words when talking with friends. Or you can write your name in the regional script for your social media bio or caption. These small actions can help keep the language and script alive.
Our cultural heritage is too valuable to let it disappear. Let’s show that Gen Z can also be cool protectors of culture. Take care of our mother tongue and keep the scripts of the archipelago alive!
