Have you ever wondered whether the food provided through a free meal program is always safe to eat? Free meals can help students get better nutrition, but food safety should never be ignored.
Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meals Program, also known as Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG), has an important goal: providing nutritious food for students. However, a good goal is not enough. The program must also be carried out safely and responsibly.
Food should help people stay healthy, not put their health at risk. Reports of suspected food poisoning linked to the program have raised concerns about food preparation, hygiene, and supervision. These concerns do not mean that the entire program should be stopped. Instead, they show why food safety needs more attention.
The government must ensure that every kitchen follows proper hygiene standards. Ingredients should be fresh, cooking equipment must be clean, and food should be stored at safe temperatures. Regular inspections are also important to make sure that food providers follow the rules. If a problem occurs, the authorities must investigate it quickly and provide clear information to the public.
Some people may argue that a large government program needs time to improve. That is understandable, but public health should always be a priority. The government should listen to public concerns and use them to make the program better. Parents, teachers, and students can also help by reporting problems with food quality.
In my opinion, the success of MBG should not be measured only by how many meals are distributed. The quality and safety of those meals are just as important. The government must make sure that the food provided is not only nutritious but also safe to eat.
A nutritious meal should make people healthier, not put them at risk. Therefore, the government must take food safety seriously and improve the program whenever problems are found. A good program is not just about giving people food. It is also about protecting their health.
