[SAM'S BOOK REVIEW] Peter Pan by J.M Barrie

by Dimas Hadi Santoso
"Second star to the right, and straight on til morning"

I dedicate this site as a domain to share thoughts especially in literature field (or perhaps variety). Reviewing book in the first time is like involving my self to the new gate. Salute, here is Sam aka Dimas Hadi Santoso (30802200012) willing to review a fiction novel entitled Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie which consists 17 chapters. A glimpse of James Matthew Barrie—a Scottish novelist, born in Angus, Scotland 1937, and student college at the University of Edinburgh.

Generally, we are
undoubtedly impressed by book's cover, aren't we? Its cover depicts a boy flying away earth or Neverland, shall I say? and there is a ship beneath him, is that his ship? more, there is an opening sounds "all children, except one, grow up" questionable. The story begins by providing us a Mr. Darling family's house in a flat located at 14, London. There live Wendy, John, Michael and Nana (a dog). Out of the blue, their bedroom has guests, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. Wendy and her little brother are welcoming Peter, having chit-chat, until Peter invites them to fly to Neverland. Their adventures happen there, witnessing mermaid, underground house, even pirates. What will they do in Neverland? What role will pirates do? Will they grow up together?

The parts that still rings in my head are "The Return Home" until "When Wendy Grew Up" after the adventure in Neverland, they have to come back to their lives. Peter and Wendy make an agreement to keep in touch by visiting Wendy's window before spring clean time comes.

-Peter, Taylor Swift

Regarding a quote above, I'd like to build the atmosphere with a little bit representation. We can understand that Wendy didn't confess her yearning for seeing Peter. She always hopes that someday Peter will return to meet her. Time flies, year passes, everything changes. Wendy becomes mother, Peter forgets his promises. At very last page, Peter still comes to them, except forgets, continuously person turns another person. There goes a boy who won't grow up.

This book suits for you who adore in fantasy, adventure, drama, love, and English. A brief love of Peter and Wendy is sweet enough. This novel also brings me back to my elementary classmate used to tell me about Peter Pan. It may relate to us who deny in becoming older and older. We have current age, yet deny to acknowledge it. In addition, you will be eager to read if you are familiar with Tinkerbell.

[Book Review] "The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Tales" by Hans Christian Andersen

Book Review: "The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Tales" by Hans Christian Andersen

Rahmatika Rohadatul Aisy (30802200005)

"That power lies in her heart,
because she is a sweet and innocent child"

"The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Tales" is a collection of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen in the fantasy genre. The main story, The Snow Queen, recounts the adventures of a young girl named Gerda who perseveres to rescue her childhood friend, Kay, who is kidnapped by the Snow Queen, a cold and mysterious ruler who lives in an icy kingdom. Kay is hit by a magical shard of glass from an evil mirror that makes her cold-hearted, and only Gerda's true compassion can save her. Through a journey filled with obstacles, Gerda meets various magical characters who help her in this quest. The various magical characters Gerda meets each represent a different aspect of the human experience. The main themes of “The Snow Queen” are the power of love and friendship. Gerda's unwavering love for Kay drives her to face various challenges, ultimately showing that love can defeat darkness. In addition to “The Snow Queen”, the novel also includes other classic fairy tales such as “The Emperor's New Clothes”, “The Little Match Girl”, and “The Red Shoes”. Each story depicts universal themes such as kindness, sacrifice, loyalty, and the fight against evil and adversity.

I liked this novel because it uses a beautiful and imaginative language style that is easily understood by teenagers but full of meaning for adult readers. In this novel, Andersen skillfully creates a fantasy world that captivates the reader. The novel also utilizes symbolism and metaphors that invite readers to explore the underlying message. The Snow Queen, cold and mysterious, symbolizes the unbridled power of nature and human emotions. Through Gerda's journey, Andersen teaches the importance of courage, perseverance, and compassion in the face of the greatest adversity. Gerda, as the protagonist, is a young heroine who is passionate and tireless in her efforts to save her best friend, presenting an inspiring character model for teenager readers. The stories in this novel offer not only entertainment, but also values that are relevant to everyday life.

However, some stories may feel bleak or tragic to young readers because Andersen adds an element of suffering or sadness to his novels. While this increases the emotional depth of the stories, some young readers may find these stories too heavy or complex.

"The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Tales" by Hans Christian Andersen is a touching and enchanting novel, full of symbolism and deep moral messages. The stories in this novel teach readers not to give in to hardship, stay true to love and truth, and always keep a pure heart. The stories in this novel not only take us into a fantasy world, but also invite us to reflect on ourselves and the world around us. This novel is suitable for teenagers and adults, especially fans of classic fairy tales.

[Book Review] It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

"There's no such thing as bad people.
We're all just people who sometimes do bad things"

Hi bookworms! I just finished reading the last page, and I'm eager to spill the tea! As you have read before, the title is It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, and allow me to inform you that the story was a whole rollercoaster-ride. Get yourself ready and comfy, because this book review will tell u my perception after reading it, and you might gain a new title into your reading list!

So, here is the deal with It Ends With Us - It's like a journey of someone who has trust issue and believe that something might too-good-to-be-true. The story follows Lily Bloom, who got mistreated by her husband, Ryle Kincaid, a charming neurosurgeon 7 years her senior. Ironically, they were truly in love before they got married. I know, I know, it sounds like any other romance book with a heavy conflict, but trust me! This book not only got me the most butterfly effects and kicking-the-air situations, but also one of the most thought-provoking and emotionally intense novel.

Starting off with the cover, I might assume that someone has a good taste. The title is typed in a massive purple font that easily caught my attention. However, the visual of broken bloom flower also come together. As soon as I noticed, it's kinda give me the hint of how the story will end up.

The next one is the story line itself that revolves around Lily who finds herself caught between her new love interest, Ryle (that ended up marrying her) and her first love, and also her childhood friend, Atlas Corrigan that appears out of nowhere. Colleen Hoover made this novel explores Lily's past and present, delving into themes of love, abuse, and the cycle of violence.

The weakness I found is lack of realism, especially Atlas' reappearance. Atlas was leaving to Boston years before they finally met again out of nowhere. (Well, since it's a fiction novel). However, it's necessary to know that fiction often needs a degree of suspension of disbelief, and what feels unrealistic to one reader (me) may resonate as truthful to another.

Nevertheless, I could assume that this novel is relatively light-weight to be a starter for a newbie reader who still in adolescence, since the Colleen Hoover using a simple writing style which is not too complex.

In conclusion, "It Ends With Us" by Colleen Hoover provides a fascinating emotional journey through Lily Bloom's life, exploring themes of love, abuse, and personal growth. While some plot elements may fade believability, the novel's strength lies in its ability to provoke thought or imagination and stir emotions. With her simple writing style and relatable characters, this book serves as an excellent entry point for young adult readers into more serious literary themes. Despite its flaws, Hoover's novel ultimately delivers a powerful message about breaking cycles of abuse, making it a worthwhile addition to any bookworm's reading list.

"It stops here. With me and you.
It ends with us."

A book review by Anisa Nur Rosiani (30802200008)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" By Mark Twain

Aulia Haidar hanif, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The well-known book "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain chronicles the exploits of a mischievous and creative youngster named Tom Sawyer, who lives in the made-up town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, on the Mississippi River. The book perfectly encapsulates youth, companionship, and the spirit of adventure.

Tom Sawyer, his buddy Huckleberry Finn, and a number of other characters are at the center of the narrative. Tom is an ordinary boy who enjoys exploring, getting into mischief, and avoiding homework. He shares a home with his half-brother Sid and aunt Polly. Tom has gone on many adventures, such as seeing a murder in a cemetery, getting trapped in a cave, searching for hidden treasure, and fleeing to an island with his pals. Every journey has a good dose of comedy, danger, and thrill.

Twain's use of local dialects, humor, and vivid descriptions define his writing style. His depiction of the American South and the era's culture gives the narrative depth and realism. The story is interesting and frequently conveys Twain's caustic view on society.

Regarded as one of the greatest American books, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" It has been made into a lot of plays, movies, and TV series. Readers have been moved by the book's depiction of a childhood adventure and its moral teachings for many years. The work functions as an introduction to Mark Twain's rather more well-known novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

A classic work of literature that encapsulates youth and adventure, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" never goes out of style. Anyone interested in reading great American literature should read Mark Twain's works because of his deft storytelling, endearing characters, and perceptive social commentary.

THE WAR OF THE WORLDS BY H.G. WELLS

THE WAR OF THE WORLDS

By H.G. WELLS

ISTIQOMAH (30802200018)

The War of the Worlds" is a classic science fiction novel written by H.G. Wells and first published serially in 1987. The novel tells the story of an alien invasion for Mars to Earth specifically in the British region.

The story begins when a series of explosions are seen on the surface of Mars. Shortly afterward, mysterious cylinders fall in various locations across England. From these cylinders emerge Martian creatures controlling giant tripod-shaped war machines. They begin destroying cities and killing humans with heat rays and poison gas. The main narrative follows an (unnamed) man as he tries to survive and find his wife amidst the chaos of this invasion.

In conclusion, "The War of the Worlds" is not just a boring old novel. This is an exciting story that makes us think about many things: about technology, about how humans deal with crises, and about how small we are in this universe. Although written more than 100 years ago, the messages in it are still relevant today.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW BY William Shakespeare

Book Review : The Taming Of The Shrew by William Shaakespeare

Nely Fadilah (30802200003)

If I be waspish, best beware my sting.”

“The Taming of the Shrew” is a comedy by William Shakespeare written in the 16th century. The book belongs to the type of drama and is one of Shakespeare's most popular works. The book tells the story of the marriage between Petruccio and Katherina, who is one of the main characters in the story. The genre of this book is comedy, so it can be enjoyed by people who like stories full of humor and interactions between characters.

The story “The Taming of the Shrew” is set in Verona, Italy. The main character, Katherina, is a very stubborn woman who does not want to get married. Petruccio, a man with a brave and clever nature, then decides to marry Katherina with the aim of turning her into a more gentle and obedient woman. In the process, Petruccio uses various strategies to control Katherina, including aggressive and unusual ways. Although the story is often thought of as a comedy, there are also elements that imply violence and male mastery over women.

I found “The Taming of the Shrew” to be an interesting book filled with humor. Shakespeare uses rich and intelligent language to describe the interactions between characters. I was intrigued to see how Petruccio's struggles tried to change Katherina, but I also felt a little uncomfortable and disapproved of the way in which Petruccio tried to change Katherina's nature. This book made me think about the role of women in society in the 16th century and how that role has changed over time.

I can relate some of the elements in this story to my personal experiences. I have been in situations where I have had to deal with stubborn people, and I know how difficult it is to change someone who is unwilling to change. However, I also learned that not everyone can be changed in the same way, and that we should respect the differences between people.

“The Taming of the Shrew” is a complex and engaging book, with elements that make us laugh and think, two elements that readers will probably not find boring when reading it. Although there is some controversy surrounding the way Petruccio controls Katherina, it is still a valuable work in English literary history. I recommend this book for those who love drama and comedy, and for those who want to understand more about the role of women in society in the 16th century.

SHERLOCK HOLMES SHORT STORIES #3 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Book Review : Sherlock Holmes Short Stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Fanisha Tita K (30802200016)

"What one man can invent, another can discover."

The book “Sherlock Holmes Short Stories #3” by Arthur Conan Doyle is a collection of short stories featuring detective Sherlock Holmes in various mysterious cases. The book consists of several stories that were published in The Strand Magazine in 1891-1892. In this review, we will discuss some of the most interesting stories and how they showcase the wit and deduction of Sherlock Holmes. This book is suitable for mystery fans and anyone who enjoys intellectual puzzles.

This collection includes six famous Holmes classics: “The Red-Headed League”, ‘The Five Orange Pips’, ‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band’, ‘The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual’, ‘The Adventure of the Empty House’, and ‘The Adventure of the Dancing Men’. Each story presents a unique case that challenges Holmes' intellect.

From the bizarre scam in “The Red-Headed League” to the mystery of the dance code in “The Adventure of the Dancing Men”, Holmes shows his skill in solving different types of crimes. “The Adventure of the Empty House” (which is my favorite case) because it's the case that marks Holmes' return after his infamous battle with Moriarty. In this story, Holmes catches a murderer named Ronald Adair using his ingenuity and keen observation.

Set in Victorian London, these stories showcase Sir Arthur's skill in depicting atmosphere. Dr. Watson's narration provides a reliable point of view, bridging between Holmes' extraordinary intellect and the reader. As a long-time fan of detective fiction, I found myself completely engrossed in these stories. The way Holmes weaves together seemingly unrelated clues to form a coherent picture is remarkable. After reading all parts of the book I feel that I'm not as smart as Sherlock Holmes 😭 (i mean Sir Arthur) but I really enjoyed following his train of thought and trying to solve the mystery with him, even though he was always a few steps ahead of me.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's purpose in writing these short stories seems to have been twofold: to entertain and to demonstrate the power of rational thought. Through Holmes, he shows how careful observation and logical deduction can unravel even the most perplexing mysteries.

While this particular collection may not have received any special accolades, the Sherlock Holmes series as a whole has been recognized as a cornerstone of detective fiction, influencing many writers and spawning many adaptations in various media.

For those new to Sherlock Holmes, this collection serves as an excellent introduction to the character and his world. For longtime fans, this book offers more of what we love about the series. Whether you're solving a case with Holmes for the first time or the hundredth time, “Sherlock Holmes Short Stories #3” is sure to challenge your mind and spark your imagination.

BOOK REVIEW ( The taming of the shrew by wiliam Shakespeare )

By Sri wulan-UNISSULA

novel cover 💓

"The Taming of the Shrew" is one of William Shakespeare's classic comedic works, written in the late 16th century, around 1590-1592. The play is set in the city of Padua and tells the story of a complex marriage relationship with themes of love, gender equality, but presented with entertaining comedic nuances. This work is suitable for those who are interested in classical drama with a touch of romantic comedy.

The main story focuses on the family of Baptista Minola. a wealthy merchant with two daughters who are very different in nature. Katherine, the eldest daughter. she is known to be stubborn and unruly, while Bianca, her younger sister. she is more gentle and well-liked. The main conflict occurs when Petruchio, a man from Verona, is determined to marry the stubborn Katherine. Through various tricks and strategies, Petruchio tries to “tame” Katherine to be more obedient and respectful to him.

I think, because the novel is peppered with entertaining comedy, it makes for an enjoyable read. However, the novel shows too much of what could be considered the oppression of women. The strategies or tricks used by Petruchio are too excessive in subjugating Katherine.

“The Taming of the Shrew” has been adapted into various art forms, including theater, opera, ballet, and musicals. this proves how the novel remains relevant despite its controversy. overall, i think the novel is an entertaining work that invites readers to reflect on gender relations and power.

“I see a woman may be made a fool,
if she has not a spirit to resist”

this sentence is one of the quotes from the novel the taming of the shrew that interests me. Where Katherina expresses her belief that a woman can be made a fool of if she does not resist.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Laila Ni'matul Munawaroh

“Romeo and Juliet” is a love story and tragedy written by the famous English writer and poet, William Shakespeare. It has become one of the most popular and influential works of literature in the world, depicting a tragic and timeless love story that explores universal themes such as love, hatred, revenge, destiny, and rebellion.

The story was written in 1595-1596 and is set in Verona, Italy, at the time of a long-standing feud between two noble families - the Montague and Capulet. The enmity between the Montague and Capulet families becomes the main driver of conflict in the story and the tragedy that befalls Romeo and Juliet.

The main characters, Romeo and Juliet, are portrayed as impulsive, and filled with passion. They fall in love instantly and intensely, and their love is described as pure, sincere, and overcoming all obstacles. However, they are also portrayed as naive and immature, with their impulsiveness and emotionality making them wrong in their decisions. In addition, Romeo and Juliet also have complexities as individuals. Romeo is portrayed as a sensitive and poetic young man, with melancholic and romantic tendencies. It is depicted by Romeo's poetic and flowery way of speaking revealing his romantic and idealistic nature. The dialogues “Lady, by yonder blessed moon I vow, that tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops” and “it is my soul that calls upon my name. How silver-sweet sound lovers' tongues by night, like softest music to attending ears”, is one of my favorite parts which shows how romantic Romeo is. He struggles with his conflicting hopes and dreams. Society and his family always put pressure on him and burden him with high expectations. Meanwhile, Juliet is portrayed as strong and determined. She struggles with her conflicting loyalties to her family and her love for Romeo, and must make difficult choices with great consequences.

The story has rich characterizations, beautiful language, and sharp explorations. It also has a direct emotional impact, and has the encouragement to keep your spirits up and not give up in the fight for love. However, in this story, Romeo is portrayed as rash and lets his emotions control his decisions, resulting in an unexpected and tragic tragedy.

With this story, William Shakespeare shows that love is a powerful force and overcomes values, loyalty, and other emotions, showing that in the face of trials, we must keep our spirits up and not give up fighting for it. The story also raises social issues of the early modern period, such as marriage, family, and violence.

A LITTLE PRINCEESS" by FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT

A LITTLE PRINCEESS" by FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT

 Dinda Ismawardani (30802200013)

The book, titled "A LITTLE PRINCEESS" by FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT with the genre of children's literature, tells the story of Sara, a girl who lives a luxurious life in a boarding school in London. Sara is an only child from a very well-to-do family, she was sent by her father from India to attend school in London. Sara is a smart, kind, and imaginative child. However, some friends don't like him because they are jealous. But bad news came to her on her eleventh birthday which was supposed to be a happy day, Sara got the news that her father had died and gone bankrupt. Since then his life has changed completely. She is treated cruelly by the principal, Miss Minchin, and made a maid at the school. All his belongings were confiscated and he was moved to a restroom under the roof. The father was Mr. Carrisford who inherited all of Sara's father's estate. Sara returned to living a self-sufficient life and became Mr. Carrisford's guardian. This story teaches that being a true princess is not determined by wealth, but by good attitudes and behavior.

Readers love this book because it has an inspiring story in it and teaches not to judge people by their possessions and appearances, teaches not to give up easily and is strong. The depiction of the setting where the story is told or written can make us imagine the setting of the place. The cover is also quite interesting, but it is a bit difficult to distinguish between monologue and dialogue because the writing is not clear or less structured, making it a bit dizzy to read. This novel is suitable to be read from the age of 16 years where at that age we need encouragement or support, this book can be used as a source of inspiration.

William Shakespeare: otthelo the moor of venice

 Otthelo the moor of venice

Elissa Arzani Putri

Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1603-1604. This story centers on othello, a moorish general in venice, who becomes a victim of manipulation by Iago, his cunning subordinate. Through intrigue and lies, Iago makes othello jealous and ultimately destroys his marriage to desdemona.

Othello, a Moorish general in the venetian army, and his tragic fall at the hands of Iago, a military officer and othello's right-hand man, is notorious for his intelligence in planning intrigue and manipulation, as well as the envy and hatred he feels towards othello. Othello is a general of the moorish army in venice who secretly marries desdemona, a venetian noblewoman, despite her father's disapproval. Iago, fueled by personal grudges and jealousy, plots to destroy othello by convincing him that desdemona is unfaithful. Through manipulation and deceit, Iago plays on othello's sense of being a moor in a largely white society, driving him into a destructive spiral of jealousy and anger that results in killing his own wife and then committed suicide because he regretted killing his wife.

The conclusion is william shakespeare's tragedy othello, the moor of venice depicts complex themes such as racism, love, jealousy, and betrayal. The story focuses on Othello, a successful Moorish general in Venice, who is caught in intrigue and manipulation by his subordinate, Iago. Although Othello was a brave warrior on the battlefield, he fell victim to destructive jealousy and betrayal that destroyed his life.

This story also illustrates how human emotions can lead to destruction both personally and socially.

William Shakespeare: A midsummer night's dream

 A Midsummer Night's Dream

Cantika Wulan T.R

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a famous play written by William Shakespeare. Written in the late 1500s, the narrative blends elements of love, fantasy, and comedy.

The story is set in Athens and a magical forest. In this forest, a group of young lovers are caught in a web of misunderstandings. We also meet Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies, who are in the middle of a dispute. Then there's Puck, the mischievous spirit, who makes everything even more complicated and brings a lot of humor to the story. I was particularly struck by how Shakespeare portrays love as something that can make people act in unusual ways. Characters like Puck and Bottom are especially entertaining and made me laugh. Puck, with all his tricks, connects the human and fairy worlds, creating a lot of delightful moments.

The play also shows how love can confuse people and lead them to act irrationally. Through characters like Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena, we see how love can influence the way people think and behave, often in hilarious ways. With its charming language and captivating characters, this play is both relevant and enjoyable to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the enchantment of Shakespeare’s world. It not only entertains but also offers insights into the nature of love and human relationships.

Animal Farm

 Ahmad Vazza, Animal Farm(George Orwell)

In my opinion, the narrative within this novel contains satire or irony directed at the governments of that era. The story presents the dynamics of power and corruption within society. By using the allegory of animals rebelling against humans, Orwell effectively depicts the complexities of power struggles. The animals, driven by a desire for a just and equal society, rise up against human oppression. However, after the revolution, some of these animals reveal their true nature, believing that 'all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.' Cunningly, they employ propaganda and violence to eliminate their rivals.

I believe Orwell's work remains relevant today, as many cunning governments manipulate the lower classes to maintain their power. The novel highlights the internal conflicts that arise when individuals seek power for themselves, leading to new forms of tyranny with oppression that is often more severe than the previous regime they overthrew.
