novel cover 💓

"The Taming of the Shrew" is one of William Shakespeare's classic comedic works, written in the late 16th century, around 1590-1592. The play is set in the city of Padua and tells the story of a complex marriage relationship with themes of love, gender equality, but presented with entertaining comedic nuances. This work is suitable for those who are interested in classical drama with a touch of romantic comedy.

The main story focuses on the family of Baptista Minola. a wealthy merchant with two daughters who are very different in nature. Katherine, the eldest daughter. she is known to be stubborn and unruly, while Bianca, her younger sister. she is more gentle and well-liked. The main conflict occurs when Petruchio, a man from Verona, is determined to marry the stubborn Katherine. Through various tricks and strategies, Petruchio tries to “tame” Katherine to be more obedient and respectful to him.

I think, because the novel is peppered with entertaining comedy, it makes for an enjoyable read. However, the novel shows too much of what could be considered the oppression of women. The strategies or tricks used by Petruchio are too excessive in subjugating Katherine.

“The Taming of the Shrew” has been adapted into various art forms, including theater, opera, ballet, and musicals. this proves how the novel remains relevant despite its controversy. overall, i think the novel is an entertaining work that invites readers to reflect on gender relations and power.

“I see a woman may be made a fool,
if she has not a spirit to resist”

this sentence is one of the quotes from the novel the taming of the shrew that interests me. Where Katherina expresses her belief that a woman can be made a fool of if she does not resist.
