Solo Batik Fashion 2024 Preserves Heritage

    Solo Batik Fashion 2024 has just ended and the event proved to be a great success. The event was held on 2 October 2024 and was a collaboration between local designers and batik artists.

    Solo Batik Fashion 2024 was launched with the aim of empowering local designers by creating events to showcase their skills and promote their designs. There are many activities during the event including fashion shows, workshops and exhibitions.

    One of the highlights of this event is making a batik car with a map of Indonesia. This project was created by a group of students from different regions of Indonesia who were invited to participate in this event.

    "I was inspired by the opportunity to learn about batik and promote my region's culture. I'm proud to be a part of this event and to have contributed to the creation of the batik motif featuring a map of Indonesia." said Sarmila, Student from Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi

she said she was proud of her culture motif.

    "We started by designing the motif, which was a challenging but rewarding process. We then applied the design to the fabric using a canting tool. It was a great experience, and I'm proud of what we achieved."

New Era Begins: Indonesia's DPR Sworn In for 2024-2029 Term

The inauguration of 580 members of Indonesia's DPR for the 2024-2029 period was held on Tuesday, October 1st 2024 at the DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta. 

From all the members, 210 of them are new faces while the rest are the old faces, and they are all from 8 different political party, such as PDIP, Golkar, Gerindra, PKB, PAN, Demokrat, NasDem, and PKS, ready to occupy all the legislative seats.

This important event highlighted by the swearing-in of elected members of the DPR led by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Mahkamah Agung), Muhammad Syarifuddin. This was followed by the signing of the Minutes of the Oath of the DPR Members.

However, this essential ceremony also attended by the president of Indonesia, Jokowi and also the elected new president, Prabowo that were in the same car, the RI 1. However, people are wondering the presence of elected vice president.

In the result of this event, Puan Maharani from PDIP legally elected to be the leader of DPR and 4 vice presidents, namely Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal form PKB, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad from Gerindra, Adies Kadir from Golkar, and Saan Mustofa from NasDem.

Pekalongan city government: So that the pekalongan batik business is not displaced by others

            The Pekalongan City Government, Central Java, has asked batik industry players to pay attention to environmental sustainability when producing batik business by using raw materials that are friendly to the environment.

“In addition, we also encourage batik industry players to continue to innovate and collaborate by utilizing technological developments to expand their business marketing,” said Pekalongan City Regional Secretary Nur Priyantomo in Pekalongan, on Wednesday 2 October 2024. According to him, the challenges of batik marketing competition are currently increasing along with the emergence of printed cloth products that are sold cheaper and in various patterns.

           However, he emphasized, as the people of Pekalongan City, they still have to “preserve” batik culture as Indonesia's cultural heritage and has been patented by this country. “We have issued a circular letter to all businesses, schools, and agencies in commemoration of National Batik Day 2024 to wear written or printed batik clothes and not printing from October 2 to October 5, 2024 so that people are more familiar with and love their own batik culture,” he said.

            Nur Priyantomo said that the city government has patented Pekalongan's batik sarong to obtain geographical indication from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights since April 1, 2023. “With the geographical indication certificate, batik sarong officially belongs to Pekalongan City. So, when talking about batik sarong, it is from Pekalongan City, other cities or countries cannot claim it,” he said.

            He said that the commemoration of National Batik Day would help drive the economy of the local community from the batik sector. “We appreciate batik craftsmen and industry players who still exist today amid the uncertain global economy. It is proven that in 2023 the regional economic growth rate reached 5.44 percent or increased compared to Central Java's economic growth of 4.98 percent,” he said.

          Therefore, the Pekalongan city government emphasizes the owners of the batik industry to use environmentally friendly materials in an effort to maintain the original Pekalongan batik industry so that it is not displaced by the printing cloth business which has a cheaper price. It is also an effort to maintain batik as an Indonesian national identity that cannot be claimed by other countries.

Global Citizen Festival 2024 is a music festival this event take place in Central Park, New York City on Saturday, September 28 2024. The artis's music line up are: Post Malone, Doja Cat, LISA (Blackpink), Jelly Roll, Rauw Alejandro, Benson Boone, and RAYE. 

since 2009 global citizens have taken over 33.5 milion actions which in combination with high level advocacy work, have led to over $43.6 billion being distributed to partners around the world, impacting 1.29 billion lives in the fight against poverty. This event is not only a music festival but this event aims to increase awareness and gather support in overcoming global issues such as:

 1. Extreme Poverty: This festival aims to eradicate cases of extreme poverty around the world with a call to action through the "End Extreme Poverty NOW" campaign from the advocacy organization Global Citizen.

2. Hunger Crisis: By holding benefit concerts, the festival seeks to address the global hunger crisis. The event also includes performances from various renowned artists to raise awareness and support hunger eradication efforts.

3. Climate Change: The festival also focuses on the issue of climate change, with several performers giving speeches and conveying important messages about protecting the environment and removing carbon from the atmosphere. 

4. Food Security: The event also involved pledges from countries such as France and Norway to provide international funding for agricultural development, aimed at fighting the global food crisis. 

At the 2024 Global Citizen Festival singer and songwriter Doja Cat delivered a powerful and emotional speech, condemning injustice in various parts of the world.

"Right now, millions of men, women and children in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo and around the world are suffering. In times like these, it is important to remember that we have the power to bring change, love and hope to those who really need it," said Doja, quoted by Billboard on Sunday (29/9).

What is the potential of Indonesian athletes with disabilities after FOD?

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) is again holding a sports program for people with disabilities in Surakarta. On October 2, 2024, the GrandHAP Hotel Surakarta hosted the "Disability Sports Festival" (FOD) Technical Guidance as a preparatory step for the main event.

This technical guidance presented various related parties, ranging from sports activists, educators, government employees, to representatives of Special Schools (SLB) throughout Surakarta. FOD will feature competitions in five sports: Bocce, athletics, badminton, table tennis, and boccia.

Ibnu Hasan, Assistant Deputy for Sports for Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized that the festival promotes equal rights between people with disabilities and non-disabled people in accessing happiness and health through sports. In line with that, Luhur Dewantoro stated that this event is a form of appreciation for the principle of equality in the world of sports.

Furthermore, Luhur expressed his hope that this activity will increase participation in sports and fitness, and has the potential to produce athletes with disabilities who are able to make Indonesia proud in the international arena.

This festival is expected to be a catalyst to increase the involvement of people with disabilities in sports activities and open more opportunities for them to excel. Surakarta is expected to set an example in promoting inclusion in the field of sports, inspiring other cities across Indonesia to follow in its footsteps.
